Transport

Kiama is located 2 hours South of Sydney, and as tempting as it could be to travel by car, we recommend all participants to come to Kiama by train.

L’Étape Australia has partnered with Sydney Trains to allow all participants to travel on the Illawarra train line at no cost to them. Participants and their supporters can use regular services as well as dedicated services that will be implemented on Friday 27, Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 November 2020. Travellers will be allowed to travel with their bikes.

A regular service between Central Station and Kiama Station takes between 2h08 and 2h28.
Dedicated services between Central Station and Kiama Station will take around 1h30 as the train will only stop at selected stations.

On Saturday 28 November, there will be extra services between Wollongong, Oak Flats and Kiama to transport riders to the start line. There will also be increased services between Berry, Gerringong and Kiama for riders registered for The Ride to travel back from Berry to Kiama.

We encourage people to spend time in Kiama and the surrounding region after their ride, this is why we will also implement extra services on Sunday 29 November for participants to travel back from Kiama to Sydney.

Important note: if you travel to the event by plane and plan on taking the train from Sydney Airport, please note that the Sydney Airport station is privately operated and you will have to pay your fare from Sydney Airport to Wolli Creek. Your train ride from Wolli Creek to Kiama is covered by your L’Étape Australia registration.

6 reasons to travel by train:

  • You can travel on the train with you bike and your friends.
  • You don’t have to worry about traffic, demerit points and being tired behind the wheel.
  • If your accommodation is not in Kiama, there will be train services from Wollongong and Oak Flats to Kiama in the morning of the race. The train services will be scheduled so everyone arrives on time for the start.
  • Beat the crowd and the potential traffic congestions around Kiama in the morning of the race.
  • Kiama train station is located 300m away from the start line.
  • Don’t drive tired after your ride, just sit and relax!

Alternatively, if you don’t wish to take the train all the way from Sydney to Kiama, we recommend you drive to one of the main train stations along the Illawarra train line and park at one of the commuters car parks (Oak Flats has a big capacity) and then take the train.
An exhaustive list of the car parks and their capacity will be published on this page closer to the event.

Accommodation

Everyone likes to have their accommodation near the start line, but there is only so much accommodation available that close to the start.

We have listed below the main websites to find available accommodation in Kiama, Shoalhaven, the Southern Highlands and surrounding regions. In order to support local businesses in their recovery from the bushfires and Covid-19, we encourage you booking directly with the property owners.

Stay in the Shoalhaven

Stay in Wollongong

Please bear in mind that the easiest way to access Kiama on race day will be via train, and we recommend you book your accommodation where you can easily access the train station.
